French President Emmanuel Macron has drawn attention to the ongoing crisis in Sudan during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA).

The African nation has been in turmoil since 2023, when fighting broke out between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has left more than 150 000 people dead and forced around twelve million to flee their homes.

Speaking at the summit, Macron stressed the urgency of a ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian assistance. “All parties involved in this conflict must commit to a ceasefire. Humanitarian aid needs to resume, and civil society must have its rightful role in pushing for dialogue and engagement with all sides,” he said, recalling France’s involvement in supporting civil society during Sudan’s previous crises in 2019.

The G20 declaration adopted at the summit highlighted the importance of tackling instability in regions like Sudan and promoting humanitarian support in conflict-affected areas.
