Fuel price surge set to deepen pressure on SA consumers

Analysts are warning that a sharp increase in fuel prices in South Africa (SA) is set to add further pressure on already strained consumers.
The statement follows new price hikes taking effect on May 6, 2026.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources says the retail price of all grades of petrol will rise by $0.20 (R3.27) per litre, while diesel is set to increase by $0.37 (R6.19) per litre.
The price of illuminating paraffin will also climb, up by $0.25 (R4.22) per litre.
