Gabon’s Special Criminal Court in Libreville delivered its verdict this Tuesday in the trial of the so-called “Young Team

After eight days of hearings, Gabon’s Special Criminal Court in Libreville delivered its verdict this Tuesday in the trial of the so-called “Young Team,” involving ten co-accused connected to Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo.

The court handed out a mix of acquittals, prison sentences, suspended sentences, and asset confiscations. The case involved 12 defendants facing economic and financial charges, shedding light on a wide network of public fund misappropriation in Gabon. Among those convicted were several former senior officials and presidential aides.

Gaël Koumba Ayouné, analyst and opinion leader, commented on the ruling, saying “This verdict is a clear signal that no one is untouchable, even at the highest levels of government. It shows a willingness to confront corruption head-on, but it will be important to see how the sentences are enforced and whether they lead to broader accountability.”
