In Gabon, the SOS Éducation la Base collective has called on its members to prepare for a possible return to classrooms, following what it describes as meaningful progress in negotiations with the government.
The move follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding which, according to the collective and its nine provincial representatives, addresses several long-standing demands by teachers. While the agreement has raised hopes of an end to the crisis, a final decision now rests with a general assembly scheduled for Saturday, the only body mandated to authorise an official resumption of classes nationwide.
Speaking to the Caleidoscopio, civil society representative Eliezer Gomat said the developments marked an important step forward, even as caution remains. “There have been advances that teachers recognise, and that is why there is a call to be ready to return to work,” he said. “But the general assembly will decide whether the conditions are sufficient for an effective and lasting resumption of classes.”
Learners and parents across the country are closely watching the outcome of the meeting, as prolonged disruptions have already taken a toll on the academic calendar.
