Authorities in Gabon have ordered the suspension of social media platforms “until further notice”, arguing that online activity has inflamed tensions and widened divisions across the country.
In a televised address, the High Authority for Communication said the decision followed concerns over the circulation of false information, cyberbullying and the leaking of personal data. Spokesperson Jean‑Claude Mendome did not name the platforms affected, though services such as WhatsApp, Facebook and TikTok are widely used nationwide.
The move comes as President Brice Oligui Nguema, who took power after a 2023 military coup and secured election victory last year, faces increasing pressure at home. Teachers and other public sector workers have been on strike over salaries and working conditions, adding to mounting social frustration.
