A new law regulating the use of social media in Gabon is drawing growing criticism

A new law regulating the use of social media in Gabon is drawing growing criticism, with concerns it could undermine freedom of expression.

The ordinance, dated February 26, introduces a stricter legal framework governing how digital platforms are used in the country.

At the centre of the controversy is a provision requiring users to register with their full names and personal identification number in order to access or use social media.

Authorities say the move is aimed at curbing online abuse and holding users accountable for harmful content. However, critics argue the measure goes too far, warning it could be used to monitor citizens and silence dissent.

Civil society groups and commentators say the requirement risks eroding democratic space, particularly in a country where political expression online has become an important outlet for public debate.
