In Gabon, President Brice Oligui Nguema has reopened the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Palace, in what observers describe as more than a routine inauguration.
The venue, once abandoned, has been fully renovated and restored nearly 50 years after hosting a summit of the Organisation of African Unity. It has also been reaffirmed as a symbol of the legacy of former president Omar Bongo Ondimba.
The reopening is being seen as a carefully staged moment, signalling both continuity and control, just over a year after Oligui Nguema came to power.
Nguema says his leadership aims to build on Gabon’s political heritage while reshaping it for a new era.
