The President of Gambia Adama Barrow has appealed to citizens to remain calm following widespread street protests triggered by severe and prolonged power outages across the capital, Banjul, and surrounding districts.
Addressing the nation following demonstrations where protesters burned tyres and erected road blockades, Barrow stated that The Gambia is not alone in facing energy deficits, pointing to broader regional power crises across West Africa.
Blackouts in the country have intensified since June, with some residential and commercial areas enduring continuous outages lasting up to 48 hours.
The Gambia relies heavily on imported electricity from neighbouring Senegal and Guinea to supplement its domestic generation.
Barrow pledged that government interventions would boost power supplies and stabilise the national grid within the coming month.
