The aid organisation Save the Children has warned that nearly two-thirds of children in Gaza Strip are at risk of infection due to a surge in rats, mice and insects in overcrowded displacement camps.
The infestation is being driven by mounting piles of rubbish, as basic services such as healthcare, clean water and sanitation systems have been severely damaged during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Families living in makeshift tents say conditions are deteriorating rapidly, with limited access to clean water compounding the risk of disease.
One mother, who lives in a camp with her three children, described the daily struggle. “While we are sleeping, they walk over our clothes, they walk over our food and even water. We have little water as well,” she said.
Aid groups warn that without urgent intervention, the situation could lead to a major public health crisis, particularly among children who are already vulnerable due to displacement and poor living conditions.
