The week-long inquiry is taking place against the backdrop of the disturbing discovery of 12 bodies of women who have been murdered.
Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane , South Africa’s (SA) Acting National Police Commissioner, says  Gender Based Violence (GBV) and femicide is a policing responsibility, while prevention, victim support and successful prosecution is not in the hands of the police.
Dimpane was presenting at the Joint National Inquiry into the Reporting, Victim Support, Investigation and Pre-Trial Functioning of the Criminal Justice System Response to GBV and Femicide (GBVF) in SA.
The week-long inquiry is taking place against the backdrop of the disturbing discovery of 12 bodies of women who have been murdered in the Ekurheleni metro, East of Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province.
“GBVF is a policing responsibility and we accept it without the reservation. But prevention, Victim Support and successful prosecution depend on capabilities residing in other hands. And where those are absent, policing carries a burden and it cannot discharge it alone. And it is the victim who bears the consequences,” says Dimpane.
