Ghana is preparing to repatriate the first group of nationals from South Africa (SA) as tensions linked to migration continue in parts of the country.

The initial group of returnees is expected to depart on May 20, following a screening process conducted at the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.

Authorities said about 800 individuals have indicated willingness to return to Ghana, while approximately 300 have completed processing. The repatriation follows gatherings of Ghanaian nationals outside the High Commission, where individuals sought assistance amid concerns over safety and economic conditions.

Benjamin Anani Quashie, Ghana’s High Commissioner to SA, said the situation has been evolving and reflects broader challenges on the ground. Quashie said economic pressures and local dynamics have contributed to tensions affecting foreign nationals.

Quashie said some Ghanaian nationals have reported difficulties maintaining business operations, citing instances where access to shops and commercial activities has been restricted. Quashie said these developments have led to a perception among some individuals that conditions are no longer favourable.

Quashie said the decision to return is linked to concerns about safety and economic stability. Quashie said the government is facilitating repatriation for those who prefer to return and will support reintegration upon arrival.

The development comes amid protests in parts of SA, where migration has become a central issue in public discourse. Authorities have indicated that immigration management, particularly irregular migration, remains a policy concern.

The repatriation process is being coordinated between Ghanaian authorities and officials in SA. The focus is on ensuring orderly departure while providing support for affected individuals.

Ghana’s government said returnees will be assisted through reintegration measures aimed at supporting economic and social stability.
