Government of Ghana has evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran

Government of Ghana has evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran following escalating violence across the Middle East, as regional security concerns continue to mount.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed that the evacuation of embassy officials from Tehran was completed safely, with authorities citing growing risks to diplomatic personnel as hostilities intensify across the region. The government has also temporarily closed its embassy in Iran, saying the decision prioritises the safety and welfare of its staff and citizens.

The move comes amid widening geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with several countries reviewing the safety of their diplomatic missions and issuing travel advisories.

Political scientist and conflict resolution analyst David Matsanga says the evacuations reflect the broader fragility of regional stability.

“Missions are often the first casualties of escalating conflicts because they represent national interests abroad. When tensions rise to this level, countries must prioritise the safety of their citizens and diplomatic staff,” Matsanga said.

He added that the situation also highlights the risk of spillover effects from regional conflicts.

“African countries with nationals working or studying in volatile regions must strengthen early warning systems and diplomatic contingency planning,” he said.

The Ghanaian government said there have been no reports of Ghanaian casualties in Iran, and that it remains ready to assist citizens in the region if the security situation deteriorates further.

The Middle East remains on high alert following intensified military exchanges involving regional and international actors, raising concerns over further escalation.
