Today marks 69 years since Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957

Today marks 69 years since Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve self-rule.

The historic moment was led by independence leader and the country’s first prime minister and president, Kwame Nkrumah.

Independence Day remains a powerful symbol of national pride, resilience and identity for Ghanaians both at home and abroad, as the country reflects on its journey since breaking free from colonial rule.

Speaking from South Africa, Ghana’s High Commissioner to that country, Benjamin Quashie said the day continues to carry deep meaning for citizens.

Quashie said the anniversary symbolises Ghana’s hard-won freedom and the national spirit that encourages the country to believe in its ability to lead and contribute to the wellbeing of its people.

He added that the day remains significant because it reminds Ghanaians of the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence, particularly the efforts of Nkrumah and other freedom fighters.

According to Quashie, the anniversary continues to give Ghanaians a strong sense of pride and joy as they remember the historic achievement that inspired many other African nations to pursue independence.
