African representation in BRICS set to grow as Ghana prepares formal membership bid

Ghana is preparing to formally submit its application for membership in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) bloc, marking a strategic shift in the West African nation’s economic and foreign policy orientation.

Government authorities in Accra stated that joining the emerging markets grouping aims to diversify international trade partnerships, attract foreign direct investment, and strengthen South-South economic co-operation.

Ghana’s bid comes amid a broader expansion of African representation within BRICS, as several nations across the continent seek alternative platforms for trade, infrastructure financing, and strategic engagement with emerging global economies.

According to Marcus Vinicius de Freitas, professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, if admitted, Ghana would join African nations including Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa within the expanded bloc, seeking access to project funding through the New Development Bank to support key national energy and transportation infrastructure projects.
