Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has criticised Africa’s continued reliance on exporting raw materials while capturing little of their value, describing the situation as a “triple dependency.”

Speaking to the media at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mahama said many African countries remain dependent on external powers not only for security, but also for health and education systems, while supplying the world with critical minerals with minimal domestic processing or economic benefit.

“Dependence on foreign powers for health and education, while exporting our critical minerals and capturing almost none of their value, limits Africa’s sovereignty and development,” Mahama said.

He highlighted Africa’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that the continent was among the last to receive vaccines, underscoring the risks of relying heavily on external actors for essential services.
