Residents of Tanzania and Burundi are increasingly turning to ginger farming and trade, drawn by the crop’s rising popularity in traditional medicine and regional markets.

Farmers say ginger offers both a reliable source of income and new business opportunities, with demand growing not just locally but across Africa. Many have embraced innovative ways to process and sell the spice, ensuring it reaches buyers beyond their immediate communities.

Producers point to the plant’s medicinal value as a key factor in its popularity, while expanding trade networks are helping small-scale farmers tap into wider markets, strengthening livelihoods and local economies.

“This shows that ginger is more than just a cash crop,” said Prosper Kiwigize. “It is driving economic activity in rural communities and connecting farmers to markets across Africa, while also supporting traditional health practices that remain important in these regions.”
