Global mpox vaccine stockpile launched

A new global emergency stockpile of mpox vaccines is set to go live later this month, aimed at accelerating outbreak response times and guaranteeing fair distribution across affected nations.

Funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the mechanism is designed to address severe supply delays and inequity highlighted during the global mpox emergency in 2024. With African countries accounting for two-thirds of all reported cases worldwide, fast-tracking delivery to high-risk communities has become the alliance’s top priority.

Dr Emanuele Capobianco, Director for Global Health Security at Gavi, explained that the new system cuts procurement bureaucracy down to days. Once an outbreak is declared, a country’s request will be reviewed within 24 hours, with vaccine doses dispatched and arriving on the ground within 48 hours, a direct lesson applied from the systemic delays seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
