SA President, UN and Legal Fraternity hail Navi Pillay’s Nobel Peace Prize

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa, the United Nations (UN), and legal authorities across the globe have united in celebrating pioneering jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay following her award of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized the 85-year-old former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for her tireless lifetime work strengthening international law and enforcing global accountability for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

In a glowing tribute, Ramaphosa stated that the award honours Pillay’s unwavering commitment to human dignity, justice, and peace, adding that SA stands immensely proud of her profound, lifelong contribution to humanity.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed sheer elation over the announcement, with Spokesperson Shabia Mantoo applauding Pillay as a staunch defender of global rights whose recognition serves as a vital beacon for all who dare to speak out against international violations.

Footage captured at the Nuremberg Palace of Justice in Germany showed a delightfully stunned Pillay reacting to the news, lightheartedly joking that she was still trying to verify the announcement before expressing her deep gratitude.

Meanwhile, SA’s legal community hailed the accolade as a monumental victory for the preservation of global justice, with prominent legal expert Professor Karthy Govender emphasising that honouring Pillay sends a powerful message of support to those defending the rule of law at a time when the post-World War II international order faces unprecedented challenges.
