The election of Supreme Court Judge Carmem Isaura Lobo as President of the National Electoral Commission marks a new phase in Guinea-Bissau’s political transition.
The appointment was made by the National Transitional Council, which replaced parliament following the November 26, 2025 coup in Guinea-Bissau.
The development comes amid broader political reforms, including proposed constitutional revisions and changes to political party laws, ahead of general elections scheduled for December 6.
According to political analyst and jurist Dr Fransual Dias, the reforms reflect attempts to stabilise the political environment, but he warned that successful implementation will depend on building public trust and ensuring inclusive electoral processes. He said the country now faces the challenge of balancing institutional reform with democratic credibility during a delicate transition period.
