Death of Vigário Luís Balanta, Secretary-General of the movement “Pó di Terra”, has triggered anger and grief across Guinea-Bissau

The death of Vigário Luís Balanta, Secretary-General of the movement “Pó di Terra”, has triggered anger and grief across Guinea-Bissau and within its diaspora communities.

Balanta, widely known for his outspoken criticism of the transitional authorities, died in a tense political climate already marked by instability, contested leadership and ongoing concerns about human rights. His death has led to serious allegations directed at the High Military Command and the transitional government.

Speaking in the aftermath, Sabino Gomes Júnior, President of the Forum of Coalitions API Cabaz Garandi and PAI – Terra Ranka, said the incident could have far-reaching consequences if not properly addressed.

Balanta’s death is a serious blow to democracy and civic engagement. Without justice and transparency, the risk of further instability remains high,” he said. “This is a moment that requires accountability. People need to see that the rule of law applies to everyone, otherwise trust in institutions will continue to erode.”

He added that an independent investigation would be critical in establishing the facts and calming public anger.

The development comes at a fragile moment for Guinea-Bissau, a country with a long history of political unrest and fragile institutions.

There are growing calls, both locally and from abroad, for a transparent inquiry and for safeguards to protect activists and political voices.
