Guinea-Bissau transitional leader removes Attorney General and Audit Court President

Political uncertainty has deepened in Guinea-Bissau after Transitional President General Horta Inta-a abruptly removed two of the country’s highest-ranking judicial figures; Attorney General Amadu Tijane Baldé and Audit Court President Gamal Abel Cassama.

The unexpected reshuffle at the helm of the country’s main legal and financial oversight institutions comes during a fragile period, following the November 2025 coup. The move has reignited serious questions about judicial independence and the state’s readiness to organise free and fair legislative and presidential elections.

Legal and political analyst Dr Fransual Dias noted that replacing key oversight leaders without clear institutional procedures threatens the balance of power when stability is needed most.

Critics warn that such executive actions risk eroding public trust in the transition process and could further complicate the country’s timeline for returning to constitutional rule.
