Lewis Hamilton says he has been quietly engaging stakeholders over recent years to help bring Formula One racing back to Africa

Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton says he has been quietly engaging stakeholders over recent years to help bring Formula One racing back to Africa.

The 41-year-old driver said hosting a Grand Prix on the continent would be personally meaningful as it connects to his African heritage, while also helping to grow motorsport opportunities in Africa.

Hamilton said he hopes African leaders and stakeholders can work together to strengthen the continent’s global influence in sport and development.

“I’m really hoping that the people who are running those different countries all unite and come together and take Africa back. That’s what I want to see, take it back from colonial powers and build the future of the continent,” Hamilton said.

He added that hosting major international sporting events in Africa would help inspire young talent and create new economic opportunities across the region.

Hamilton has previously spoken about increasing diversity in motorsport and expanding Formula One’s global footprint into underrepresented regions, including Africa.
