South Africa’s (SA) Border Management Authority (BMA) says it is processing unusually high volumes of travellers and freight vehicles at the Beitbridge border post, one of the busiest crossings between SA and Zimbabwe.

BMA Northern Region Commander Ntakuseni Lambani says the congestion on the SA side is largely the result of limited parking space across the border in Zimbabwe. According to Lambani, this has at times forced officials on the Zimbabwean side to temporarily halt the movement of trucks.

“What we have noticed is that there is not enough parking space on their side,” Lambani said. “When they stop processing, trucks begin to pile up, and that leads to congestion along the N1.”

He added that the situation has been frustrating for motorists and operators but confirmed that the BMA has deployed additional personnel at the border to manage the increased traffic and ease delays.

Beitbridge serves as a critical trade and travel gateway in southern Africa, with thousands of people and vehicles passing through daily.
