Human Rights Watch has called on Ghanaian leaders to uphold international legal protections that guarantee the rights to equality, non-discrimination, freedom of expression, and privacy for all citizens.
This appeal follows the reintroduction of a draconian bill targeting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals.
Ghana’s parliament passed a version of the bill in February 2024.
However it lapsed without the approval of then President Nana Akufo-Addo, who maintained that he would not allow the country to “backslide” on human rights.
