The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has successfully distributed all essential registration materials to over 23 000 voting stations across all nine provinces ahead of this weekend’s mass voter registration drive.
The nationwide push is a critical step in preparing for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 2026.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo confirmed that registration centres across the country will be open from 08:00 (CAT) until 17:00 (CAT) on both Saturday and Sunday. The commission has urged all eligible citizens to use the weekend to register as new voters, verify their current details, or update their address information.
To ensure smooth operations, the commission has deployed a stock of 39 000 Voter Management Devices (VMDs) to registration centres. These devices are central to the IEC’s modernised digital strategy, enabling real-time identity verification, accurate capture of geographic details, and the seamless integration of voter data directly into the national voters’ roll.
In addition to the VMDs, logistics teams have finalised the delivery of core operational supplies, including stationery packs, directional signage, and secure document storage boxes to all designated venues.
