IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva met Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye at the Fund’s headquarters for discussions on Senegal’s economic policy priorities. “I was delighted to welcome President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye to IMF Headquarters today and expand our constructive dialogue on Senegal’s economic policy priorities,” Georgieva said.
Georgieva said the IMF and Senegal were working quickly to develop a new programme supporting the country’s economic and development objectives. “I expressed my deep appreciation to the President and his team for our strong partnership as we work expeditiously towards a new Fund-supported programme,” Georgieva said.
According to Georgieva, Senegal has made progress in strengthening the economy and improving prospects for investment, employment and economic growth.
The discussions focused on reforms needed to maintain macroeconomic stability, support private-sector activity and produce social and economic benefits for Senegalese citizens. “Senegal has made encouraging progress in strengthening the economy and improving the outlook for investments, jobs and growth,” Georgieva said.
“Our discussions reaffirmed our shared commitment to advancing reforms that support macroeconomic stability, enhance private-sector activities, and bring tangible social and economic benefits to the Senegalese people.”
Georgieva welcomed Senegalese authorities’ intention to seek debt treatment as part of efforts to restore sustainable public finances. “I especially commend the authorities’ intention to pursue a debt treatment and their determination to swiftly restore fiscal sustainability,” Georgieva said.
Debt treatment could support Senegal’s efforts to manage financial pressures while creating room for priority development spending and measures intended to strengthen economic growth.
The IMF said continued cooperation would focus on supporting Senegal’s reform programme and wider development ambitions. “We are fully committed to supporting the authorities’ reform efforts as they pursue their development ambitions,” Georgieva said.
“I am confident that, by working together, we can deliver lasting results for the people of Senegal.”
