Electing to bat, India reached 187-3 at tea on the opening day of the second test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday.
India captain Shubman Gill (50) and Devdutt Padikkal, batting on 63, raised 120 runs for the third wicket.
Padikkal was dropped twice early in his innings.
India lost openers KL Rahul (18) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (45) in the morning session.
Rishabh Pant is yet to open his account.
India are 1-0 ahead in the two-test series.
