Climate Expert from the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), South Africa (SA), Professor Wiseman Chingobe says the heavy rainfall that the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces are experiencing is due to a low-pressure cell that has been over the Indian Ocean for some time now
Chingobe, a Professor of Physical Geography at UMP, says the low pressure cell is now shifting towards the east, which has resulted in the southern part of Africa getting affected by heavy rainfall. Chingobe has warned people to stay away from strong flowing rivers.
“All these heavy rains that we have experienced here is not a topic of cyclone, It’s just a depression. A low pressure cell is now shifting towards the east, this is why you find the amount of rain that is falling in Malawi, Zimbabwe and modern Mozambique is somewhat decreased but the intensity is still the same in the Eastern Mpumalanga and parts of Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal because the system is closer to this Southern parts of Africa,” he said.
