Insurgency displaces over one million people in northern Mozambique province of Cabo Delgado

Ongoing armed insurgency in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado has internally displaced approximately 1.3 million people since the conflict erupted in 2017.

According to data released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the crisis continues to drive fresh displacement, with more than 26 000 individuals forced to flee their homes between January and June of this year alone.

The violent conflict, spearheaded by militant groups locally known as al-Sunna wa Jama’a, has devastated local infrastructure, halted major economic projects, including multi-billion-Dollar liquefied natural gas developments, and claimed thousands of civilian lives across the region.

Highlighting the scale of the humanitarian emergency, UNHCR Communications Officer in Mozambique Isadora Zoni noted that displaced populations face severe challenges regarding access to shelter, basic food supplies, and essential services, putting immense pressure on host communities and international aid organisations operating in the region.
