International election observers have warned that Zambia’s general election has been marred by political intimidation, abductions, and localised violence.
The European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission said a decision by the Electoral Commission of Zambia to temporarily pause vote counting on Friday sparked widespread anxiety and confusion. The suspension followed reports of violent attacks on electoral staff and the theft of marked ballot papers in isolated parts of the country.
EU Chief Observer Michael McNamara called for complete transparency as vote tallying resumes across the country.
McNamara stressed that any further interruptions to the count must be legally justified and clearly communicated to the public to maintain faith in the final result.
