Director-General of the International Organisation for Migration, Amy Pope has warned that intensified military escalation in the Middle East will force more families from their homes
This as fighting continues between the United States and Israel on side and Iran on another. Pope who has been on official visit to South Africa has told SABC NEWS that they will continue to support efforts to deal with migration in the Middle East.
“Millions of people who need humanitarian support just don’t have the support they need. Sudan is a good example. We’ve seen people who’ve been displaced by violence, women who’ve told horrific stories of rape and sexual assault. We’ve heard of people who don’t have enough food and, of course, are searching for food. So, in the first instance, making sure people have access to the most basic humanitarian support actually is a way to ensure that there’s better managed migration down the road,” she said.
