Civil society organisation Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX) has condemned the killing of a foreign national in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal province.
The man, believed to be in his late 30s, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of about 50 people in the Durban on Thursday.
Police say the group was part of a larger group of protesters marching against illegal immigration.
KAAX Spokesperson Dr. Dale McKinley has called on police to arrest those responsible.
McKinley says, “The police must do their job; a criminal act is a criminal act irrespective of who’s involved, also to ensure that when these mobilisations take place, the police are there.”
“They don’t seem to ever be where they need to be, and then they say they were overwhelmed, or they didn’t know, and I think the reality is that we know that our police are weak, in many cases in terms of their enforcement of the law.”
He adds, “They need to pull their socks up and do what they’re supposed to do, do what they’re hired to do, and do so without fear or favour. Our law does not discriminate according to what you look like, according to what language you speak, or according to where you come from.”
