Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has emphasised that nuclear energy will play a crucial role in the country’s long-term development plans.

Speaking in Paris at the second Nuclear Energy Summit, Kagame described the sector as central to Rwanda’s ambitions under Vision 2050, the government’s blueprint for sustainable growth and industrialisation.

He noted that expanding Rwanda’s energy mix is critical to meeting growing domestic demand and supporting industrialisation, while also ensuring environmental sustainability. “Our goal is to provide reliable, affordable, and clean energy to power our industries, homes, and public services,” Kagame said.

Rwanda is exploring partnerships and expertise from countries with established nuclear programmes to safely develop its nuclear capabilities. Kagame stressed that a strong regulatory framework and skilled workforce will be essential for the sector’s success.
