Kenya has expelled Zimbabwean civic activist Brian Kagoro

Kenya has expelled Zimbabwean civic activist Brian Kagoro, accusing him of involvement in what authorities described as foreign-backed attempts to incite political unrest, though no public evidence has been presented to support the claim.

The decision has drawn regional attention amid rising political tensions in Kenya, where recent youth-led protests have increased scrutiny of civil society groups. Kagoro was detained for 14 hours after arriving in Nairobi from Johannesburg South Africa before being deported without formal documentation declaring him persona non grata, according to Pan African Lawyers Union Chief Executive Officer Don Deya.

Deya said Kagoro, a long-time colleague, was held incommunicado and interrogated on routine personal and professional matters. He described the deportation as part of a wider regional trend of tightening pressure on activists.

Kagoro is said to be safe but is considering legal and diplomatic options, while civil society groups have warned that the incident could have broader implications for freedom of movement and political expression across East Africa.

Kenyan authorities have not publicly responded in detail to the allegations. Deya argued that the treatment of the activist risks undermining Kenya’s long-standing reputation as a regional hub for Pan-African dialogue and civic engagement.
