Kenya has released from quarantine the first group of people who came into contact with its index Ebola patient, marking a milestone in containment efforts.
The 20 people completed 21 days of monitoring without developing symptoms and are in good health, Health Ministry Director-General Patrick Amoth said in a statement.
Kenya has reported nine Ebola cases so far, with two deaths.
The remaining seven patients are stable and receiving treatment, adding that 98 others still in quarantine would be released in four waves beginning next Tuesday.
Health Ministry Director-General Patrick Amoth says that this is a milestone worth celebrating and a reminder that the work is not yet done,” he has urged Kenyans to welcome them home and maintain vigilance.
The outbreak spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it was declared in mid-May.
Kenya’s first case died in Nairobi on October 5, with Nigeria saying its first case in over a decade appears closely related to Kenya’s index case after both flew out of Uganda’s Entebbe airport on the same day in earlier this month.
