Kenyan government says it will formally engage Russia following growing reports that Kenyan citizens are being recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to the BBC, Kenya’s Foreign Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, described the alleged recruitment as “unacceptable” and “clandestine”, raising concern over how citizens are being drawn into a foreign conflict.
Mudavadi said the government believes the number of Kenyans involved could be significant.
“We believe that maybe close to 200 Kenyans could be involved. But as things stand now, the government of Kenya has helped to repatriate about 27. We have also seen about eight Kenyans who have either died or they’re missing in action,” he said.
The government is now seeking clarity from Russian authorities on the circumstances under which Kenyans are being enlisted, amid fears that some may have been misled with promises of employment opportunities abroad.
