Kenya’s Judiciary has warned that a 20.3 billion Kenyan Shilling ($155 million) budget deficit could compromise its ability to handle election disputes during the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
Presenting the 2026/2027 budget estimates to Parliament’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, Chief Registrar Winfridah Mokaya stated that the Judiciary requires 50.7 billion Shillings ($388 million) to run its operations and prepare for election-related legal challenges.
However, the National Treasury has capped its allocation at 30.4 billion Shillings ($232 million), leaving a 40% shortfall. Mokaya pointed out that the funding gap directly affects the Judiciary Elections Committee, the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, essential technology upgrades, and the hiring of officers needed to resolve political petitions within tight legal deadlines.
