Several people have been killed after a helicopter crashed in Kenya, including a sitting Member of Parliament (MP).

Police and government officials said the aircraft went down in Nandi County, in the country’s North Rift region on Saturday. Authorities said the cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

County Police Commander Samuel Mukusi told local broadcaster Citizen television that six people died in the accident, including the MP, the pilot and four other passengers.

Kenyan President William Ruto later identified the lawmaker as Johana Ng’eno, who represented the Emurua Dikirr constituency. Ruto paid tribute to the deceased in a post on social media, describing the incident as a tragic loss.

Emergency services have launched investigations into the crash while authorities work to recover wreckage and determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
