Prominent Kenyan opposition figure Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that there was an attempt on his life during a church service on Sunday in central Kenya.
Gachagua, who was removed from office as Deputy President following an impeachment process in 2024, said the incident took place at a church in Othaya, in Nyeri County.
He claimed that a group of rogue police officers attacked the church, firing bullets and using tear gas during the service. In a statement, Gachagua accused President William Ruto, his former political ally, of ordering the alleged attack, though he did not provide evidence to support the claim.
Police have denied any wrongdoing and said an investigation has been launched into the incident. Authorities added that no injuries were reported.
The allegations come amid heightened political tensions in Kenya, following Gachagua’s dramatic fallout with the ruling administration after his impeachment last year.
Government officials have not yet responded directly to the accusation against the President.
