Kenyan marathon world record-holder Ruth Chepngetich has been banned for three years after admitting to anti-doping rule violations.
The 31-year-old was provisionally suspended in July following a positive test for Hydrochlorothiazide, a banned diuretic often used as a masking agent, from a sample collected on March 14.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) initially sought a four-year ban, but her suspension was reduced after she admitted to the violations.
Her previous achievements, including her world record time of two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds at the Chicago Marathon in October 2024, will remain valid.
However, the AIU says investigations are ongoing after evidence from Chepngetich’s phone “indicated a reasonable suspicion” that her doping offence may have been intentional, with messages allegedly dating back to 2022.
