Economist, Dr Azar Jammine says small businesses are finding it extremely difficult to secure capital
South Africa (SA) experienced another spike in business liquidations in September. There was a 23.9% increase in the number of businesses closing down. Jammine say big businesses get more support which contradicts government’s goal to boost small businesses.
“There is indeed a complete divergence between the oft-stated desire to promote entrepreneurship and small business activity, partly because small businesses proportionately create far more jobs than do big businesses, but in reality, we find that there are huge obstacles to small businesses actually succeeding. And one of these is the fact that they find it extremely difficult to access capital to borrow money,” he said.
