The South African (SA) Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has confirmed large numbers of dead white mussel, whelks and other shellfish have been washed up at St Helena Bay and Elandsbaai on SA’s West Coast over the past 48 hours

The departments say this is due to the presence of a harmful algal bloom or Red Tide that’s common during summer and autumn along the West Coast. The Red Tide is extremely toxic to humans. The Department has cautioned members of the public to refrain from eating the washed out marine animals as they carry significant health risks, rendering them unsuitable for consumption.
