Scores of learners from Lesotho were processed at the Maseru Border Post this morning as they crossed into South Africa (SA) to attend school.
While some are enrolled at boarding schools, thousands of Basotho learners make the daily commute to nearby SA towns that share a border with Lesotho.
Parents say the journey requires careful planning and strong logistics to ensure children arrive at school on time and safely. One parent, Rorisang Mokone, who has registered her children at schools in Ladybrand, says the daily routine can be challenging but worthwhile.
“My daughter is going to Ladybrand, to Metis Primary School. She’s starting Grade Two today. It’s her first day at Metis and her first time being a learner in SA,” Mokone said.
Cross-border schooling remains common among border communities, driven by proximity and access to education opportunities across the Lesotho–SA border.
