Lesotho’s mining sector contributes approximately 7% to 10% of GDP
Lesotho’s mining sector contributes approximately 7% to 10% to the country’s Gross domestic Product (GDP), driven almost entirely by its high-value diamond industry.
It is for this reason that the government is being urged to seriously consider practical steps towards signing and ratifying the statute of the African Minerals Development Centre.

The Joint Mission on the Ratification of the African Minerals Development Centre is in Lesotho to help enhance the use of its mineral endowments for sustainable development by improving the quality of geological data, strengthening contract negotiation capacity and improving the country’s ability to manage its mineral wealth, among other measures.

Lesotho says it is facing unique challenges in attracting investment, building technical capacity and ensuring that mineral revenues translate into sustainable jobs.

The county says this highlights the need for a coordinated approach.
