Lesotho is seeking improved free movement of people, goods and services with neighbouring South Africa (SA) as part of efforts to strengthen trade and drive economic growth.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Southern African Development Community Foreign Affairs Ministers Retreat in Skukuza, SA, Lesotho’s Foreign Minister Lejoane Mpotjoane said the two countries are engaged in bilateral discussions aimed at easing cross-border movement while respecting each country’s immigration laws.
Mpotjoane said greater mobility between the two neighbours would facilitate trade, improve the movement of people and create new economic opportunities.
He noted that enhanced co-operation would benefit citizens of both countries and contribute to stronger economic growth on both sides of the border.
Lesotho and SA share deep economic and social ties, with thousands of Basotho living, working and conducting business across the border. Officials believe that improving movement between the two countries could further support regional integration and economic development.
