Liberia has taken fresh steps to strengthen its healthcare system and modernise its financial sector, welcoming medical specialists from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and launching a new instant payments platform through its central bank.
The arrival of DRC health professionals is expected to help address staffing shortages in Liberia’s healthcare sector, while the instant payments system aims to improve financial inclusion and speed up transactions across the economy.
Political analyst and international relations expert Dr David Matsanga has praised the developments as practical examples of South-South co-operation on the continent. “This is Africa working with Africa,” Matsanga said, adding that such partnerships reduce reliance on external assistance and promote shared development.
However, he cautioned that the initiative also highlights ongoing challenges within the DRC’s own health sector. “While exporting skilled professionals is positive, it also reflects persistent infrastructure and capacity constraints back home,” he noted.
The twin reforms come as Liberia pushes ahead with broader economic restructuring efforts aimed at strengthening public services and supporting sustainable growth.
