Liberia is marking 179 years of independence this Sunday, celebrating its legacy as Africa’s oldest democratic republic.

While its 1847 founding remains a monumental moment in continental history, analysts point out that the former American colony is still wrestling with deep-rooted political and economic struggles that have stalled real progress for generations.

Yet, this year’s official theme, “One People, One Destiny: Healing the Past, Building the Future”, signals a country attempting to confront its past while charting a new path forward.

According to Political Analyst Professor Bheki Mngomezulu, national milestones like this offer a vital opportunity for honest introspection.

“Whenever a country celebrates its independence, it looks back at how far it has gone, where it has made some missteps, and what it can do going forward,” said Mngomezulu. “If you look at the theme for this year’s celebration, it brings hope because they are saying ‘One people, one destiny, healing the past, building the future.’ That means they are aware they have to take stock of what they’ve done over the years. They know the problems exist, and they are trying to put plans in place so they can build a better future.”

As Liberians honor their historic sovereignty, the anniversary serves as a reminder of both the nation’s enduring resilience and the long road ahead toward true economic stability and social healing.
