Lesotho Highlands Water Project
On September 30, 2024, the Lesotho Highlands Water Project shut down the transfer tunnel to South Africa (SA) for maintenance.
The scheduled maintenance takes place every 10 years, in Lesotho tunnel, and it is inspected for possible areas of wear and tear, particularly on the steel linings.
The Lesotho project transfers 780 million cubic metres of water per year to SA Gauteng Province per annum.
The tunnel requires general inspection and repair works to be conducted.
This is to ensure the integrity and reliability of the entire water tunnel system.
It is a transfer tunnel linking Katse Dam with Muela power station and Muela Dam.
