In a move set to shape Malawi’s political landscape, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has reappointed former President Lazarus Chakwera as its candidate for the 2030 presidential election.

Chakwera, who previously served as Malawi’s head of state, will once again seek the nation’s highest office, signalling continuity within the party and reaffirming its confidence in his leadership.

Political analysts say the decision could reignite debates within the MCP and among opposition parties, as the country looks ahead to the next general election.

Correspondent Richard Mwafulirwa reports that party officials described Chakwera’s selection as a step towards unity and stability, emphasising the experience he brings to the campaign.
