Malawi has declared an end to its 2025 to 2026 cholera
Malawi has declared an end to its 2025 to 2026 cholera outbreak after achieving 100% coverage in a preventive vaccination campaign in Blantyre.
The August drive reached 186 108 people across five high-risk areas including Chemusa, Chirimba, Chilobwe, Suya and Mpemba with a second dose of oral cholera vaccine to boost long-term immunity.
The campaign was the third phase of Malawi’s response, shifting from emergency containment to sustained protection in communities most vulnerable to transmission.
World Health Organisation provided technical leadership, logistical support and over $120 009 in funding, while traditional and religious leaders mobilized communities to ensure full uptake.
Health authorities say the intervention led to a steady decline in cases and no further large surges, marking a major step toward cholera elimination.
